So, What is a Feis?

A feis, (pronounced Fesh) is an Irish Dance compition. Feis is often what keeps Irish dancers interested in Irish Dance. I know before I took Irish dance, I got bored with Jazz and Musical Theater because I had no way to be competitive in it.Question: Do you have Feis Syndrome? Well, follow this link and find out! http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Alley/9643/syndrome.html

  Preparing for Feis

Week Before:

Do not learn new steps! Practice what you know already. This is the time to be working on prefecting what you know already.
Start taking a multi-vitamen and eating healthy. I know this sounds weird but I found if if I eat heathly and take a vitamen every day, for a week or two before a feis, I dance better.
Start drink water! I read that if you are even 2% dehydrated, you lose up to 20% of your energy!
Try to practice every night with someone watching you, so they can help correct mistakes (i.e. turn-out, not over crossing, not high on toes, etc.)

Night Before

Eat a dinner high in protean, I have heard some dancers say they dance better if they do not eat meat the night before, but I don't know if this is true.
Polish your shoes. I find that rubbing Petroleum Jelly into your dance shoes, makes them look brand new and shinny!
    Pack your dance bag
Put everything by the front door, so you don't forget anything.
If you are curling your hair, you should do it now. Make sure your hair is almost completely dry. I started using a bonnet drier which helps a lot, if your hair is as thick as mine.

Irish Dance Fairy
Okay, I'm At the Feis-What Now?

Before Dancing:

First: Take a deep breath and relax! Feis is suppost to be fun, so enjoy every moment of it!
Second: Find the check in booth to pick up your dancing number, if you haven't already received it beforehand
Find out what stages you are dancing on and when
About 10 to 15 mintutes before you are to dance, walk up to the stage and look for a women with a clip broad. You need to check in with her.

Dancing:

Finally, it is time to dance, walk on stage like the pro you are.
Stand in line with either your toe pointed, or your feet crossed.
Stand quietly! This is not chatter time, but a time to get focused. If there is dancing still going on, listen to the music. This helps to get a feel of what you are doing
If you are a beginner, a stage mom will normally tell you when to dance, by clapping. But don't always rely on this! You need to be listening and paying attention!
After dancing, bow to the judge and musician, then walk back into line.
When the judge either nods, or rings a bell, walk off stage.

After Dancing:

Depending on the feis, they will either announce the awards, or you will need to go to the award room to check the results.
If they are announcing the awards, make sure to listen for your number, and try not to dilidally. Often times awards can take forever because dancers are paying attention to what is going on!
If the awards are being posted, find the award room, and make sure to bring your dancing card
Look for the postings, and if you placed find the award pick up take for your stage. Show your number to the award person, and get your metal.

After The Feis:

    RELAX!

Remember it is often a good idea to arrive one to two hours piror to the time you are suppost to be dancing. Feis' sometimes run on time, but more than not, they don't!
